Be prepared. Build skills. Help your community.
North Haven CERT Basic Training gives you practical skills to prepare yourself and your family for emergencies and help your neighbors when assistance may be delayed. Learn alongside others in your community through classroom instruction and hands-on practice.
Training is free for participants age 18 and older.
Express interest in CERT training ↗
You can take the training without becoming an active North Haven CERT member. Build your own preparedness first, then decide whether volunteering is right for you. Submitting the interest form does not commit you to attending a class.
What you will learn
The course follows the CERT Basic Training curriculum. Topics build a foundation for safe, organized community response; the order of individual sessions can vary by class.
- Disaster preparedness: Understand local hazards, make household plans, and assemble emergency supplies.
- CERT organization: Learn how volunteers coordinate assignments, communicate, and support emergency responders.
- Disaster medical operations: Practice basic assessment and care skills and learn how medical assistance is organized during a disaster.
- Disaster psychology: Recognize stress reactions and learn ways to support survivors and fellow volunteers.
- Fire safety and utility controls: Identify hazards and learn the safety principles behind small-fire response and utility emergencies.
- Light search and rescue: Learn scene assessment, safe search methods, and basic rescue principles.
- Terrorism and CERT: Learn awareness, reporting, and personal safety considerations.
What to expect
Training combines instruction, demonstrations, and practical exercises, including disaster medical skills and light search and rescue. You will learn to recognize your limits, put safety first, and work within an organized response.
North Haven also offers training related to shelter operations. For those who choose active service, opportunities can include shelter support, community preparedness activities, food drives, and other local emergency support.
Classes meet over multiple sessions. When a class is being organized, we will share its dates, times, locations, and participation requirements so you can decide whether the schedule works for you.
Interested in a future class?
The best first step is our interest form. It helps us contact you about training opportunities, even if you cannot attend the next scheduled class.
- Tell us you are interested. Complete the short form with your contact information.
- Hear from North Haven CERT. Once class details are finalized, we will contact you by email or text to confirm your interest and availability.
- Decide when you are ready. If you want to proceed, we will provide the application and background-check information. If the timing does not work, we can confirm whether you would like to be contacted about future classes.
Class dates are subject to change and depend on sufficient participation. The interest form is an inquiry, not a confirmed class registration.
